Fire Safety – Awareness & Prevention by Alvin

A very engaging talk on Fire Safety, Awareness and Prevention, was given by Alvin, a trainer from The Fire Preventor’s Society.

Alvin has been with the Fire Preventor’s Society (an NGO) for about 3 years now. The Society was established by a group of young, enthusiastic, like-minded individuals, who give Fire Prevention Talks, which are endorsed by the state Fire Department of Johor Bahru.

The main objective of these talks is to cultivate a fire -hazardless culture in our society. Somehow, we Malaysians, seem to think that the prevention of thefts is far more important than the prevention of fires.

We just assume that while a fire may make place elsewhere or affect someone else, it will not take place in our immediate premises, nor affect us. However, Alvin demonstrated through several examples that such thinking can be fatal, with the loss of lives, which cannot be re-gained.

The Society works hand-in-hand with schools, banks, factories and government offices in creating the awareness in fire prevention among members of the public. The talks aim to educate children and adults on the proper way to prevent fires and how to react when fires occur.

The Society conducts talks at road shows and other social events to spread this important message to as many individuals as possible. The Society just about works with any organization to promote “Fire Prevention and Awareness.”

On a daily basis talks are carried out in the main languages to spread the news of “fire prevention” in the hope of minimizing the occurrences of fire, which traumatize the nation. In the city of Johor Bahru itself, there are an average of 26 reported cases of fires daily.

The Fire Preventor’s Society hopes to reduce the occurrences of fires by ( at least half ), in the next two years, with their aggressive promotion of Fire Safety, Awareness and Prevention talks.

Alvin then introduced members to the types of fire extinguishers that are available, informing them that the ones with the powder content are by far the safest for use. He also informed members on the importance of smoke detectors which automatically trigger off the alarm in the case of a fire, thus making it fast for occupants of the premise to sun for safety. Alvin pointed out that it is essential for the occupants of a premise to have a meeting point, where all can be accounted for.

With this, Alvin displayed samples of the 1kg and 2 kg fire-extinguishers, together with the smoke detector. Alvin enthusiastically took questions from the floor and provided further explanations in answer to questions from the floor.
