About Rotary
In late 1951 an Anaesthetist by the name of Dr. R. H. Isaac was posted to the General Hospital, Johor Bahru as Medical Superintendent. Dr. Issac being a former Rotarian had been visiting the Rotary Club of Singapore. Together with a group of interested people meetings were held in which the Rotary Club of Singapore provided information about Rotary. Eventually a little over twenty persons banded together to form the Provisional Rotary Club of Johor Bahru with the Singapore Club as the sponsor.
Weekly lunch meetings were held at the Johor Civil Service. Many of the members were from the Civil Service as well as a number of planters from the outskirts and they found it difficult to maintain the one hour lunch meeting and eventually decided to hold the evening tea meeting at 5.15pm.
When the Charter was granted to us, we held our Inaugural Meeting at the Royal Johor International Club on July 22, 1952. The guest of Honour as the late Sultan Ibrahim and members of the Royal family also graced the occasion. Ever since then His Majesty, the Sultan of Johor or his representative has always granted privilege of a Royal attendance at our Installation Dinners.
The club has grown from strength to strength and as of January 2010 we have 58 members. The club has also produced 3 District Governors.
